With proper maintenance, the theoretical lifespan of resin tiles (20-30 years) is generally longer than that of color-coated steel tiles (15-25 years). However, in actual application, the choice should be based on geographical and climatic characteristics.

Both materials have their shortcomings, and blindly pursuing "longevity" can be counterproductive.

Resin tiles: A durable alternative to steel

The core component of resin tiles is PVC or ASA engineering resin, formed through a multi-layer co-extrusion process. Their longevity advantage stems from a triple layer of protection: the ASA resin surface layer offers exceptional UV resistance. Laboratory data shows that color deviation remains less than 5% after 3,000 hours of xenon lamp aging testing; the PVC middle layer provides rigid support and has an impact strength three times that of ordinary color-coated steel tiles; and the bottom layer, an anti-corrosion layer, resists acid rain. In a real-world case study on a rooftop in coastal Guangdong, a resin tile showed only slight fading after 12 years of use, while color-coated steel tiles installed at the same time had already developed rust spots. However, it's important to note that resin tiles have limited heat resistance. Prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding 70°C will accelerate aging. Summer roof temperatures in northern China can reach over 80°C, necessitating the installation of additional insulation.

Colored Steel Tiles: The Economical, Practical, and Lightweight Champion

Colored steel tiles are essentially galvanized steel sheets coated with a coating, and their lifespan depends on the quality of the coating. Ordinary polyester-coated colored steel tiles can begin to peel after just five years in humid environments, while high-end PVDF coatings can extend weather resistance to over 15 years. Tests at a Northeastern storage center showed that double-sided galvanized colored steel tiles with a coating weight of 180g/m2 remained structurally intact after 10 years under temperature cycles ranging from -30°C to 40°C. However, their critical weakness is their high thermal conductivity of 50W/m·K. Summer indoor temperatures can reach 5-8°C higher than those of resin tile roofs, necessitating additional ceiling insulation. Furthermore, caution is warranted: mechanical damage can directly damage the galvanized coating. At one logistics park, hailstorms penetrated the coating, leading to localized rust that penetrated the sheet material in just three years.

Application Guide for North and South

For hot and humid southern regions (annual rainfall > 1000mm): Resin tiles are preferred. Preventing moss growth is crucial. It's recommended to install them at a slope of 30° or higher, and clean the surface quarterly with a soft-bristle brush. For color-coated steel tiles, they must be constructed with a PVDF coating and stainless steel rivets, and the eaves should feature a drip-beak design to prevent rainwater backflow.

For severely cold northern regions (annual temperature fluctuation > 60°C): A combination of color-coated steel tiles and insulation is recommended. Choose panels with a galvanizing content of 275g/m2 or higher, secure them with a cross-shaped keel, and allow a 5cm air insulation layer. In northern China, resin tiles require ventilation towers. Snow accumulation exceeding 15cm in winter should be removed promptly to prevent deformation caused by freeze-thaw cycles.

Important reminder: Regardless of the material, foundation preparation is crucial to the tile's lifespan. In southern China, a double-layer waterproofing pad is required, while in northern China, ensure the purlin spacing is 60cm or less. Regular inspections are more important than material selection. We recommend that resin tiles undergo professional inspections every three years and color-coated steel tiles every two years, with a focus on checking the joint seals and the condition of the fixings. Remember, there is no absolutely long-lasting material, only scientific application solutions.
